Mock life flight

Coloradoan reporter Jason Pohl and I worked with Windsor Severance Fire Rescue, Poudre Valley Hospital EMTs and members of the Air Link flight crew to document a mock heart attack scenario in which Pohl was the heart attack victim. EMTs worked on him in a park next to Severance Fire Station 2 and loaded him into an ambulance. The Air Link guys flew in from Medical Center of the Rockies and transferred him into their tiny life flight helicopter. We got a scenic ride back to the hospital and a tour of the cath lab before Jason was allowed to be healthy again. Great group of people, very professional, and a fun learning experience for both of us. Check out the story and video we made here:

Same-Sex Couples Marry in Colorado

Barbara Hooper and Wendy Wood, top photo, were the first same-sex couple to marry in Larimer County. They arrived at Larimer County Courthouse minutes after 3 p.m. - the time County Clerk Angela Myers said the office would begin issuing licenses. The Supreme Court declined today to review gay marriage cases in which circuit courts (Colorado is in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals) previously ruled that same-sex marriage bans violate the Constitution. The decision led Colorado Attorney General John Suthers to announce all county clerks must issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Hooper said she only had "a little trouble" with the paperwork because her heart was beating so fast.

Carri Ratazzi and her partner of 15 years, Rev. Gretchen Haley, took their adopted daughter Gracie Ella, 9, and Josef, 6, out of school early and picked up their marriage license from the courthouse. They held an impromptu ceremony at Sunrise Ranch in Loveland at a Unitarian Universalists retreat. Rev. Nancy Bowen, who said she has been involved in the campaign for marriage equality for a decade, performed the ceremony.

Officer-Involved Shooting

Fort Collins police officers work at the scene of an officer-involved shooting at the Cimarron Square town homes on the corner of Drake Road and Shields Street Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014. A police officer shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon after the suspect fired at least one round that struck the officer's bulletproof vest during an otherwise routine call for service. Fort Collins Police Services responded to a call for a welfare check and the responding officer saw an unidentified man lying on the ground of a stairwell. As the officer approached and attempted to contact the man, the man pulled out a pistol and shot the officer at least once, Fort Collins Police Services Deputy Chief Cory Christensen said. The officer shot back, striking the man an unspecified number of times. Both were taken to the hospital, where the suspect died.
